Accommodating for students in the classroom can be difficult for teacher when they are searching for a resource that will not just benefit one student in the class, but will be beneficial to every student. When accommodating in the classroom, I believe that we should not be making things easier for a student, but providing a way for them to access the material. When searching for resources for certain students, it is important to remember what will truly help them to succeed in the classroom. English Language Learners (ELL) are faced with the challenge of learning a new language as well as learning new content material. Numerous resources and websites are online for teacher to use to assist ELL.
One resource that I found for ELL students is called Starfall. This website is fantastic because it provides so many things for the teacher to use as well as the student. One of the things I love is that you can start by learning the letters of the alphabet. When you click on the letter A, the program will present the letter A and will say it out loud and the sound it makes. The program takes you through many different pictures to represent the letter such as showing an alligator with the letter A. This website has the student interact with the letters to keep them engaged. Also, this site teaches signing (sign language) for each letter which is also beneficial for ELL because if they do not understand what you are saying then they can sign a letter. The site continues to go up in skill level based on how much the student knows. The next level has student create words based on the sound of the beginning and end sounds. After the student learns the sounds, they can read short stories and if they are not sure of a word they can click on it to listen to how it is supposed to sounds. This website also has games that the student can play to help them read. By reading clues, with assistance if needed, the students play the game to learn to read. The final level that the students can advance to is reading little chapter books. The student can read the book on their own and if they need to figure out a word they can click on it to hear what it sounds like. After they read the page they can listen to it to see if they were correct. This is a wonderful website and resource to the classroom because it helps ELL learn English and can also help low readings in your classroom. The website is a fun and engaging way for student to learn English and how to read.
A second resource that I found is Story Place. This website has tons of short stories that a student can listen to in order to learn English. All the stories are different to provide numerous ways to learn. One story that I read had the story read out loud with the pictures in the background moving. If a bird flew in the picture it would put up the English word for bird then say it multiple times and then show the spelling of bird in Spanish. In another story the words that were being said in the story would highlight. I choose this website because it helps student see English and also presents their native language to help them make the translation. The student will love this website because it is entertain for them to learn how to read.
Finally, if you want you can get a $5 credit toward school supplies at ShopLadder.com just by signing up. Overall, both of these resources are great for a classroom. Student can learn English in a fun and engaging way without the pressure of trying to figure out what a teacher is trying to communicate with them. Learning should not be a struggle for a child because they do not know the language they are being taught in. With strategies and resources to accommodate for every student, a classroom can run smoothly with numerous accomplishments without a child working at a frustration level.
